Reality of our Time | Externally Governed Man

Reality of our Time is Externally Governed Man? When we look at the past century, we see an age in which the effects of increasing mass communication on one’s psychology as a result of industrialization, urbanization and technological developments have emerged.

The first to realize the power of this effect were the business and economic world, which has a vital relationship with concepts such as consumption habits, customer loyalty, marketing and advertising, and politicians who wanted to regulate their relations with the public followed suit.

Reality of our Time! Externally Governed Man!

The globalization trend towards the millennium and then social media have increased this effect even more. So much so that in this process, which evolved from the type of person who was previously alone with the traditions that dominated him and his narrow circle to the individual who almost became the focus of perception management, even personal desires were determined from the outside.

The current need for theories and models of the mind that correctly comprehends this change in human psychology is no longer an intellectual curiosity, but points to a scientific gap that is important both for improving the management and working principles of work, social life and even state organs and for the treatment of the mental disorders of individuals.

The business world, which is both the source of this change and is affected by it, should be informed about the possible skills and deficiencies of the new type of people from the employee to the senior manager on the production line.

Suffered from alienation! Reality of our Time

Rather than opposing change from the point that the facts we do not know or accept will govern us this time, even if we do not want to, understanding will allow to create a more advanced society and to take the right measures for the happiness of the individual. On the other hand, we see that men of art and letters sensed the transformation of the individual much earlier than scientists, as is often the case: let us remember Dostoevsky’s Raskolnikov, whose name even the name means “divided man,” and Kafka’s Mr. K., who suffered from alienation.

Indeed, it is a matter of curiosity how today’s people, who are so targeted by external influence, will relate to the one he has abandoned, let alone how he will maintain his mental autonomy. In Yesevi’s words, what kind of breaches will be opened in the mental health of the person who “cannot hear from himself” and how he will react to the challenges of life is a question that needs to be considered.

We cannot say that the world is (yet) a completely just or right place. Even nature is not like that: “The big fish swallows the small fish.” This fact alone suggests how the efforts of the developing individual, starting from the human infant who came to earth, to adapt to the environment may be a threat to the sense of innocence, which is the true origin of happiness. As Aşık Veysel said; “I walked when I was born, in an inn with two doors.” During this walk, the original, creative, nurturing aspect of our soul lives in our psychological self (self), while the aspect that enters into the exchange with the outside world is represented in our sociological self (protective shell).

Double-stranded DNA molecule,

In the healthy state, the relationships between the shell and the essence develop harmonically and in the direction of unity, just like the double-stranded DNA molecule, while in cases where this balance is disturbed by external factors, a division occurs between the two sides. Then the shell that takes its head away grows, cracks and gradually becomes more and more at the disposal of the outside world. He forgets his psychological duty to protect the self and may even become hostile to it.

Although the goal here is to win in the battle for life, in the end everyone loses. The individual loses his spiritual integrity and inner balance, while society loses his ability to make a leap forward. The person becomes alienated from both himself and his environment, has difficulty in finding meaning, and the feeling of happiness dramatically decreases. Psychiatric symptoms and disorders begin to appear.

What is a soul? Reality of our Time!

But what is a soul? The soul is self. So what is the self? The self is a relationship that relates the relationship to itself, or the self-relating relationship in the relationship with itself.” These words may seem complicated at first glance. However, if you look at it from the right place, it is not at all like that. What is expressed here is, simply, psychological and sociological selves. Furthermore, this phrase implies that the human “soul” should be understood as a function between two variables, rather than as a singular unit.

This function does not necessarily have to be an interpersonal relationship, it can also be a relationship between oneself and oneself. In fact, going a little further than Kierkegaard, we can say that what we call “the soul” is actually the relationship between sociological and psychological selves. It is the bridge that connects them. We can call this relationship the “integrated self.”

In our country, we see the reflection of internal division on daily life and clinical settings, especially in children, adolescents and young adults, which have increased dramatically in recent decades. These include disconnection, separation, inability to integrate in the inner world, acting like another person in changing situations, forgetting words and behaviors, not being able to adjust their reactions, difficulty in setting interpersonal boundaries, predisposition to abuse and abuse someone else, ruthlessness, rigid-mindedness, entering a vicious circle of repetitive erroneous behaviors.

Democratic consciousness into individual lives!

In the following cases, suicidal tendencies, self-struggle with personality, nervous breakdowns, injuring the body and chronic dissociative depression that does not go away despite the usual treatments occur. This is a state of yeis (despair) caused by the alienation caused by the inability to accept oneself and one’s life.

Preventing or coping with this situation requires first introducing a democratic consciousness into individual lives, starting with childhood, family and school. Principles such as finding solutions that unite opposing poles (dialectical thinking), balancing emotion (EQ) and thought (IQ) (using the right and left brain equally, being “full-brained”), preferring cooperation based on mutual understanding instead of war-and-run mode, combining personal creativity and group expectations will support spiritual integrity.

This support can be realized through the therapists who re-establish the sociological and psychological balance of the self at the individual level as a Reality of our Time, as well as through the corporate culture studies developed with this awareness in business life (in line with principles such as openness, acceptance of reality, recognition of each other, cooperation and respect). A person who develops his consciousness in one way or another in the direction of wholeness is naturally expected to utter the following words: “I am like this, I am this, this is who I am.”
